MeaningFrom Maurice (a Moor)
Crest symbolMarsh reeds
English, Scottish and Welsh, from Maurice, an Old French name brought to Britain by the Normans, from Latin Mauritius, a derivative of Maurus 'a Moor'. In Wales it replaced the native name Meurig. In Ireland it is from Gaelic Ó Muirgheasa or, more often, the Norman 'de Marisco', meaning 'of the marsh'.
Spellings and related forms: Morrice, Maurice, Morison, Morse, Morriss, Moritz (German), de Marisco.
Reeds follow the Irish Norman form 'de Marisco', 'of the marsh', one of this name's roots.
Most surnames have no single "family crest". In heraldry, a coat of arms belonged to one person and passed down one line of descent. Sites that sell "the Morris coat of arms" usually show the arms of one historic family that shared the name. Ours is different on purpose: an original design built from what the name means, which any Morris can own honestly.
Blankets: soft velveteen plush (100% polyester), printed on one side; may run up to 3 in. short of the listed size. Rugs: polyester chenille with hemmed edges and a coated backing, for indoor use. Both are printed in the USA (Georgia and North Carolina).
