Spanish (Rodríguez) and Portuguese patronymic from the personal name Rodrigo; the -ez ending means 'son of'. Rodrigo is the Spanish form of Roderick, from Gothic/Germanic elements for 'fame' (hrod) and 'ruler' (ric). It was the name of the last Visigothic king of Spain. Portuguese equivalent: Rodrigues.
Spellings and related forms: Rodríguez, Rodriquez, Rodrigues, Rodrigo, Ruiz.
Rodrigo means "famous ruler": the crown for ruler, the laurel for fame.
Most surnames have no single "family crest". In heraldry, a coat of arms belonged to one person and passed down one line of descent. Sites that sell "the Rodriguez coat of arms" usually show the arms of one historic family that shared the name. Ours is different on purpose: an original design built from what the name means, which any Rodriguez can own honestly.
