Spanish (González) patronymic from the personal name Gonzalo, from medieval Latin Gundisalvus, a Visigothic or Suebi name. The first element is gunda/gunþo 'war, battle'; the second is uncertain. It is the second most common surname in Spain and among the five most common in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela.
Spellings and related forms: González, Gonzales, Gonzalès, Gonçalves.
Gonzalo is built on an old word for "war". One reading of the second part is "hall", so the shield shows a fortified tower.
Most surnames have no single "family crest". In heraldry, a coat of arms belonged to one person and passed down one line of descent. Sites that sell "the Gonzalez coat of arms" usually show the arms of one historic family that shared the name. Ours is different on purpose: an original design built from what the name means, which any Gonzalez can own honestly.
