Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Briain 'descendant of Brian'. Ancestry says Brian is probably based on the element bre- 'hill', with the transferred sense 'eminence', i.e. 'exalted one'. The feminine maiden form is Ní Bhriain. In Ireland there has been some confusion with O'Byrne.
Spellings and related forms: Ó Briain, Brien, O'Bryan, O'Brian, Brian, O'Brine, O'Bryen.
It follows the likely root of Brian, 'hill' or 'eminence', meaning an exalted one.
Most surnames have no single "family crest". In heraldry, a coat of arms belonged to one person and passed down one line of descent. Sites that sell "the O'Brien coat of arms" usually show the arms of one historic family that shared the name. Ours is different on purpose: an original design built from what the name means, which any O'Brien can own honestly.
