Where the Armstrong name comes from

English and Scottish nickname from Middle English arm + strang, for someone 'strong in the arm', mainly from Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Clan Armstrong was a well-known Border Reiver clan; many were granted lands in County Fermanagh in the Ulster Plantations. In Ulster it was also adopted for Gaelic Mac Thréinfhir 'son of the strong man' and Ó Labhradha Tréan 'strong O'Lavery'.

About this crest

An ox, the classic picture of strength, stands for a nickname that means 'strong in the arm'.

Most surnames have no single "family crest". In heraldry, a coat of arms belonged to one person and passed down one line of descent. Sites that sell "the Armstrong coat of arms" usually show the arms of one historic family that shared the name. Ours is different on purpose: an original design built from what the name means, which any Armstrong can own honestly.

Questions

Is this the official Armstrong coat of arms?

No. Coats of arms were granted to individual people, not to everyone who shares a surname, so there is no single Armstrong coat of arms that every Armstrong can claim. This crest is our own original design. The shield shows a sturdy ox, chosen from the meaning of the name.

Can I change the text?

Yes. The family name is always Armstrong. Type your own line underneath: a year, first names or a place. Leave it empty if you want the name alone.

Do I see it before it is printed?

Yes. We email you a proof of your exact artwork before anything is printed. Nothing goes to production until you approve it.

How long does it take?

Each piece is printed to order in the USA. Printing takes up to 10 business days, then a few days in the mail, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. US shipping is free. Ordering for a date? Order early.

What if it arrives damaged or misprinted?

Tell us within 30 days with a photo and we reprint it at no charge. Because every piece carries your name, we cannot take back an item that arrived as approved.
